Part of the first collection of WWI New Zealand military records to be published to Ancestry.com’s website, this collection contains records of those casualties sustained by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). Initially the NZEF consisted only of volunteers, but in August of 1916 conscription was mandatory. By the end of the war approximately 124,000 New Zealanders had served in the NZEF — nearly half of the eligible male population of 250,000. About 100,000 were sent overseas to fight in France, Belgium, Egypt, the Middle East, and Gallipoli, nearly 17,000 died of wounds or sickness while on active service during the war, and another 500 died while undergoing training in New Zealand. An additional 35,000 were wounded and 414 prisoners of war were repatriated, bringing the total casualties to over 53,000.
